One of the most exciting things about Polaris Dance Theatre’s new sister company ELa FaLa is the photo of its founder. Instead of posing mid-prance in a form fitting leotard or delicate tutu, Barbara Lima is rocking overalls, one strap undone like a mid-’90s badass, her hands floating toward you as if she were conjuring some sort of spell to lure you in. The Brazilian native has created her first evening-length original work for the collective, which was inspired by her move to the U.S., where she faced language and cultural barriers. If Anna is anything like her mesmerizing picture, it’s sure to be anything but traditional and filled with spunk.
