2022 Polaris-shortlisted Acadian artist Lisa LeBlanc will perform in support of her acclaimed album, Chiac Disco, at the Marquee Ballroom in Halifax on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tickets are on sale now.
After earning major acclaim at Quebec’s Festival international de la chanson de Granby, Lisa LeBlanc released her self-titled debut in 2012 to tremendous response. There was an undeniable thirst for her raw, stripped-down songs, and her unique mix of roots, rock, and country.
The album earned Lisa a number of accolades in the Francophone music community including Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the ADISQ gala, Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the GAMIQ awards, and the prestigious Révélation musique prize from Radio-Canada. In 2014, she released the Highways, Heartaches and Time Well Wasted EP, and followed it up with 2016’s Why You Wanna Leave Runaway Queen? - the latter landing on the 2017 shortlist for the Polaris Music Prize. For both of those releases, LeBlanc opted to sing in English, expanding her creativity and reaching new audiences.
In 2020, LeBlanc expanded her creative output by embodying a bingo-kitsch alter-ego named Belinda for her part-joke, part-tribute EP, It’s not a game, it’s a lifestyle. She began flirting with disco, which set the tone for what would follow. LeBlanc returned to French-language music on her latest album, Chiac Disco (Bonsound, 2022), co-produced with her creative accomplice, Benoît Morier. The record is a tribute to the era of chic disco and funk, and to the memory of Lee Hazlewood, thanks to the lively melodies and resounding percussions.
LeBlanc gave her bandmates – Mico Roy (Les Hôtesses d’Hilaire), Benoît Morier and Léandre Bourgeois (Les Hôtesses d’Hilaire) – free rein on Chiac Disco, creating an atmosphere of sharing and collaboration. Ultimately, a sound reminiscent of the 60s and 70s came together, with a unique mix of disco and chiac influences – a kind of cultural patchwork of rural disco, or rather chiac glamour. The album is bright, sparkly, and fun, filled with glittery music and colourful lyrics that are sung with pride and confidence.
Originally from Rogersville, New Brunswick, Lisa LeBlanc is singer, songwriter, musician, and producer whose many accolades include a JUNO Award nomination, an Indies Award win, and multiple nominations from ADISQ - a notable organisation that fosters the development of an independent, strong and innovative musical production in the francophone music community - among the ever-growing list.
