Alan LeQuire: 'Monumental Figures'
The Parthenon
Tue, Jun 17 - Sep 21 All day
Marking the 35th anniversary of sculptor Alan LeQuire’s iconic “Athena Parthenos” — a replica of Phidias’ fifth-century B.C.E. sculpture that once occupied The Parthenon in Athens, Greece — Metro Parks and the Centennial Park Conservancy host Monumental Figures, 24 new sculptures by LeQuire. The exhibit, which began June 13 and runs through Sept. 21, features colossal portraits in and outside the Parthenon that honor women who have inspired the artist, including Tennessee Olympians Wilma Rudolph, Tracy Caulkins and sisters Gretchen and Alex Walsh; pioneering Vanderbilt neonatology researcher Dr. Mildred Stahlman; Meharry professor Dr. Dorothy Brown; and activist Fannie Lou Hamer. Alongside these luminaries, LeQuire presents four groupings of everyday women, also cast in colossal scale, reminding viewers of the significance of all people, even those whose names don’t make the history books. In the Treasury section of the Parthenon, LeQuire’s “Complete and Unbroken,” which is a collection of 10 larger-than-life torsos, explores ancient sculpture and the human figure. Goddess in Progress, a behind-the-scenes retrospective of LeQuire’s “Athena Parthenos,” runs through April 19 in the East Gallery.
