Street Theatre Company: 'Lizard Boy'

FULL DESCRIPTION

Street Theatre Company has been on quite a roll this season, serving up a marvelous mix of smart, funny and thought-provoking works. And this weekend promises to continue that trend, as the stalwart nonprofit presents Justin Huertas’ Drama Desk-nominated indie-rock musical Lizard Boy. This unusual piece follows a lonely young recluse named Trevor whose scaly green skin hides the heart of a true superhero. Featuring book, music and lyrics by Huertas, Lizard Boy first premiered at Seattle Repertory Theatre in 2015 and went on to play at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2022 before enjoying a successful run off-Broadway in 2023. Frequent Street collaborator Deonté L. Warren directs this much-anticipated production (with musical direction by Randy Craft), and the cast includes Eklan Singh, Shane Kopischke and Delaney Amatrudo. I’m also eager to check out Jim Manning’s set design, along with Melissa Durmon’s costumes. Balancing mythological/comic book vibes with themes of identity, self-discovery and acceptance, it’s a perfect choice for Pride Month — and, of course, for Street Theatre. AMY STUMPFL
